Interim Dean Schnell's Message: Collegiate Relationships & Postgraduate Success
On January 15 this year, two Honors College seniors and an Honors College alum from the class of 2012 visited the Class of ‘18 Honors College students in our first Thursday night plenary of the spring semester. Ben Teasdale '15, Emily Howe '15, and Jen Kaulius '12 were there to talk with our first-year students about UVM Four-Year Plan for Career Success , something that had, in fact, not been in place at UVM when they began their undergrad careers and, in the case of Jen, not even when she completed her degree. Our hope was to “demystify” the plan a bit—“see, you can be really successful even without these check lists!”—but also to show how Ben, Emily, and Jen had actually done much of what is on the lists, and therefore how incredibly helpful it is to have that inventory check sheet as a kind of roadmap. Standing at the front of Billings Lecture Hall, the checklists for all four years projected on the big screen behind them, all three students were—as so many of our students are—inspiring and down-to-earth, completely unintimidating and yet very accomplished at the same time. Mission accomplished, I thought.

Honors College Scholars Class of 2015
Imagine spending spring semester of your sophomore year immersed in Scottish culture, searching for the Loch Ness monster on a weekend, and traveling the Continent on break. But, you say, "I need to fulfill my HCOL credits and take a critical class for my major! I can't possibly study abroad then."
Starting in Spring 2016, there will be a solution! Honors College sophomores (Class of 2018) will be able to participate in the prestigious Principia Consortium program and spend a semester at the University of Glasgow. The only study abroad program exclusively for U.S. honors college students, this program lets students fulfill their sophomore year HCOL credits and also offers courses for most UVM major requirements, including Organic Chemistry.

Spotlight on HC Scholar - Ben Teasdale
Kathleen Bashant is busy in the research lab of Dr. Ralph Budd, a faculty member at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine, working on a project for the third straight year. She’s part of a team that is looking at dendritic cell and gamma delta T cell interactions and their role in the immune system -- in particular, in Lyme arthritis. She spends hours every week conducting tissue culture experiments and trying to come up with a procedure for how best to isolate the gamma delta T cells.

Honors College Accepting Applications for the Summer 2015 Career Development Award
The Honors College is pleased to announce the creation of the Career Development Award, a competitive opportunity that will provide financial support to students who want to gain career and workplace experience. The Honors College Career Development Award seeks to support students who intend to participate in a career-related internship opportunity during the summer of 2015, and who need financial assistance in order to accept an offer for an internship. Two awards of up to $3,500 each will be awarded to Honors College students in the spring of 2015 and will support their internship work throughout the summer.

Zeltzerman Lecture: "Science and the Racisms of our Times" with Dr. Ian Haney-Lopez
In March, the Honors College welcomes U.C.-Berkeley Law Professor Ian Haney-Lopez for the 2015 Zeltzerman Lecture. Professor Haney-Lopez is a leading scholar of race, equality, and constitutional law, and has earned a very wide readership by tackling interesting and important problems and writing about them with great insight.
Haney-Lopez first rose to prominence with the 1990 book White By Law, which examined fifty-two U.S. court cases from the early twentieth century in which judges had to decide what the words “white person” meant in American citizenship law. There are many vantages on the question of what "whiteness" consists of and means, and in White By Law Haney-Lopez zeroed in on cases involving living, breathing humans who disagreed with the government over their racial classification. The book remains both a terrific read and a classic in the field.

UVM Student Research Conference (SRC) April 23, 2015
As part of the University of Vermont's celebration of student scholarly and creative achievement, the Student Research Conference (SRC) showcases the research and innovative activity of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students across campus. Held each year in the Davis Center, the SRC is an opportunity for undergraduates to share their recent work and garner the recognition they so well deserve.
All students working on a research or creative project with a UVM faculty member are eligible to present some aspect of their research at this forum. Research and creative projects at any stage of completion are welcome. The event also serves as a resource for students who are not yet involved with research but wish to learn about how to engage in research pursuits.
Leading up to this year's research conference, UVM is welcoming Instagram posts to #UVMResearch where we encourage students to tell their own research story through pictures. Students who enter ten photos become eligible for a drawing for a $50 gift certificate.
