Grants and Internships
Providing Undergraduates With The Necessary Funding To Accomplish Their Research.
Undergraduate Research Grants available only to UVM students
Mini-Grant & Summer Internship Requirements
- Student must be in good academic standing
- Academic record, particularly in the sciences, will weigh heavily in the selection of the proposal
- Students must be full time undergraduates to receive a grant.
- Preference is given to upper level students depending on the strength of the proposal
- If research is being conducted with human subjects, animals, isotopes, or DNA, appropriate IRB approvals MUST be indicated in the grant proposal or the proposal will NOT be reviewed.
- The proposal is judged on its strength (hypothesis, objectives, evaluation methods clearly defined, background justification and outcomes clearly discussed). Some aspect of the project must be hypothesis driven, and the student's role in project must be clear.
- The proposal must be written by the student applicant. While it is important that the faculty sponsor review and advise in the writing of the proposal, it must be clear that the student has written the proposal and understands the project.
- The letter of support from the faculty sponsor of the project can impact the decision of whether or not to fund a proposal and must include how you know the student applicant.
- Previous funding does not prohibit you from applying but previous award winners will be given a lower priority.
- Grants will not fund equipment
- Grants Committee will consider funding travel expenses only if the travel is intrinsic to the project and the student is accompanied to the field or other off-campus site by the faculty sponsor (or graduate student).
Mini-Grant
- Provides support, on a competitive basis, to UVM students who are doing research projects at UVM.
- During the fall and spring semesters, up to $500 for research expenses and supplies is available per student.
Summer Internships
- The Summer Internship Program has profoundly changed undergraduate education on our campus.
- Each spring undergraduates apply for the summer program which consists of a summer salary ($3500) and supply funding ($1500) on a competitive basis for up to 9 students each year.
- Presenting their research each spring at the Student Research Conference (SRC)has given them the unique opportunity to create a professional display of their work and to come together as a group to see what their peers are doing in research.
