OUR Funding Opportunities

OUR provides several different funding opportunities for undergraduates currently enrolled at the University of Vermont. All require a UVM faculty sponsor and must comply with UVM research policies. All awards require a letter of support from your faculty. The form to use is the Faculty Sponsor Form, which may be downloaded here.

There are funding options for the academic year and summer, so look around and ask us if you have any questions. We run workshops and have drop in hours (Wednesdays and Thursdays) in the Hub (100 Davis).

Upon completion of the work, an Award Completion Form must be returned to OUR. No further funding will be considered for the student until the form is received.

ROLLING AWARDS

Apply only when ready.  Available until the money is spent for the year.

Mini Grant (MG)

These small awards are used only for your research expenses, and may not be used to cover personal living expenses or those incurred for UVM courses. The average amount is $500 (academic year) / $1000 (summer), but additional funds may be requested with evidence of need.

Important Dates & Deadlines:

  • Application Deadline: Submit application when all materials are ready.

NOTE: Students may receive one Mini and one Travel Award during each academic year.

Travel Award

This award is to present at a conference  (averages $500 domestic and $1000 international). You must have an accepted paper/presentation/performance at the time you request the funds. Awards may be used to pay for conference registration, food, transportation, parking, or lodging. Your expenses may far outstrip the ability of this fund, so we suggest you seek alternative funding (and we can help you think about where to go look!).

NOTE: Students may receive one Mini and one Travel Award during each academic year.

Undergraduates Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

NOTE: This award is offered in partnership with the Honors College and is therefore only available to HCOL Students.

Award Description: Available for Honors College students currently working on their college-approved thesis projects. Award up to $300 to cover your expenses, though these may not include copying costs of your thesis (students in their senior year should contact the Honors College main office to request a limited budget copy card to use for that purpose).

Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Internship (OCME)

Award Description: Provides an opportunity for students with the proper scientific credentials and career trajectory to intern with the State of Vermont Medical Examiner. Students must have two weekday mornings (8am-12pm) available during the term they are applying. And while there is no compensation for this internship, students may receive academic credit.

Application Process: This application is separate from all other awards due to the fact that this is for an internship rather than grant money. Therefore, please fill out this document to apply. Once you have submitted your application to OUR we will review and submit the most qualified applicants to the State of Vermont Medical Examiner for further review. NOTE: Being selected as an applicant for the next step does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

  • Spring internship (January-April)  deadline:  3rd Friday in November
  • Summer internship (May-August) deadline:  3rd Friday in February
  • Fall internship (Sept - December) deadline:   3rd Friday in August

SUMMER AWARDS

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)

This year we are using a common application for the summer awards, which provide $4000 personal stipend plus up to $1000 for research expenses. All together these are called the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships, which includes these programs:

  • Deadline to Set up Payment: June 16, 2017

Simon Family Public Research Fellowship

Award Description: Must be community-based research, a research partnership composed of the student, faculty mentor, and community partner. The collaboration is designed to engage the student in scholarship with the purpose of solving a real world problems and affecting change. This award provides up to $1000 research expenses and a $4000 stipend to supplement students living expenses and facilitate commitment to the project in lieu of a summer job. (This application requires two letters of support, one from faculty and one from your community partner. Do not use the Faculty Sponsor form for either.

  • Deadline for Risk Safety, IACUC, IRB, etc.: June 15, 2017
  • Deadline to Set up Payment: June 16, 2017

INTERNSHIP FUNDING

This year we are using a common application for the summer internship awards that come from several departments around campus. OUR Public Impact Research Award (PIRA) is part of that grouping as is the CEMS/RSENR Energy-Climate Public Impact Research Fellowship and the Honors College Career Development Award. The application site is hosted by the Career Center.

Award Description: Helps students defray the personal costs of accepting an unfunded or under-funded internship. Each award carries specific requirements.

Funding Opportunities via OUR Partnerships

Environmental Studies Summer Student Research Award

NOTE: This award is offered in partnership with the Environmental Program at UVM and is therefore given to students with their research focus in that area and preference will be given to Environmental Studies majors.

Award Description: The Environmental Program is partnering with OUR to offer summer research award funding of $2000 (for stipend and/or expenses) to UVM undergraduate students conducting environmentally-related research. Student applicants should have the direct support and supervision of a researcher who is knowledgeable and qualified to support the proposed research effort.

National Science Foundation funding at UVM

UVM has two summer National Science Foundation-Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REUs) that are available to UVM students and students from other institutions.
