Town Mentoring Program

Background Information

Launched in January of 2007, the Mentoring Program couples at-risk youth with community members in an effort to build a network of positive relationships, offer hands-on job related skills, and initiate student interest in future goals. Customized to meet the individual needs and interests of each student, the program, through an integrated partnership comprised of Local Resources, Mountain Valley Unified School District, and the Watershed Center, provides technical, vocational and professional skills with support and guidance from a network of caring adults. Mentors consist of local tradesmen and women, small business owners, service workers, school district employees, technicians, and government employees.

A diverse group of students, mentored weekly in a 1:1 ratio, participate in hands-on learning within a specific vocation, trade and/or business, as well as on-the-job training, related work experience and guidance within a profession of their choice. Students are identified based on their need for extra support, direction and guidance.

Along with the above aspect, students learn to be accountable to their job site and mentor, responsible for specific duties, and learn to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to the given vocation. Students rotate work sites on a biannual basis, allowing for variation and diversity of mentors and work experience. The rotation also increases their support network within the community.
