College and Culture Program

The college and culture is a relatively new program getting its start in 2006. This program offers outreach services to socially, physically and culturally isolated families within the Hayfork area and remote outlying communities such as Hyampom, Trinity Pines and Forest Glen. Students living in isolated and rural areas do not have exposure or access to college campuses, diversity and cultural events that are readily available to those living in urban areas. Students and parents are given an opportunity to visit multiple college campuses, explore particular departments, college services, housing options, student life and a cultural event. Lack of transportation, financial obligations, and unfamiliarity with post-high school educational options are just a few obstacles that prevent many students from pursuing higher education. The majority of our students in the Hayfork area are at-risk, where they are exposed and often pressured to use alcohol and drugs. Methamphetamine abuse is a major problem in Trinity County, in particular the Hayfork area where students are susceptible to such usage. By sparking an interest in post-high school education our intent is to provide students and parents with an alternative focus to substance abuse. We intend to foster positive energy and provide opportunities that encourage healthy interests and career choices.
