Youth Watershed Restoration Crew

Background Information

The Youth Watershed Restoration Crew was started in 2004 in response to local youth requests for employment and training opportunities. As a partnership project of the Watershed Center and the South Fork Management Unit of the US Forest Service, the Youth Watershed Restoration crew also addresses the need for the reduction of hazardous fuels around our community and surrounding forests. Since 2004 the crew has grown to eight youth members, who are trained in forest restoration and stewardship.

Crewmembers work with Forest Service personnel, other natural resource professionals, and forest user groups on projects including wildlife habitat enhancement, watershed restoration, archaeological site rehab, fuel reduction and trails restoration.

Looking to apply to be a youth watershed restoration crew member?

Each summer The Watershed Center hires paid crewmembers to be part of the Youth Restoration Crew. Crewmembers must be 15-19 years old and available to work 8 hours/day on Monday - Friday from mid-June through mid-August. Duties include trails maintenance, fuels reduction (hand piling) and other natural resource restoration work. Crewmembers need to be physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions using a variety of hand tools. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain skills and valuable experience in forest stewardship and restoration work and help the community, while at the same time earning a paycheck! Interested students need to submit a resume and application to The Watershed Center in early May. Applications are available in the Hayfork High School office.
