Dear faculty,
Some of you may be aware of the historic $1.5 billion settlement of copyright infringement claims for pirated works in the Bartz v. Anthropic class action case. The claims process for distribution of the settlement money has started. Many of the works in the pirated set were published by academic presses and were authored by academics. As such, some UVM faculty members may be entitled to claim relief.
The settlement website includes a database where authors and publishers can determine if their works were part of the roughly 500,000 works infringed. If their works are in the database, they are eligible to submit claims for each work that was infringed. Each work infringed is eligible for roughly $3,000, which is shared between author and publisher.
In addition, the Textbook and Academic Authors Association has posted information on its website about how to navigate the Anthropic claims process.
Sincerely,
Linda S. Schadler
Interim Provost and Senior Vice President
