Remembering Judith Ramaley, UVM’s first woman president

Dear campus community, 

I’m writing to share the sad news that Judith Ramaley – UVM’s first woman president – passed away on August 24.

President Ramaley will be remembered for her passionate dedication to leadership in higher education as well as her renowned scholarly and professional work in biology. She served as UVM’s 24th president, from 1997-2001, before departing to take on the role of assistant director of the Education and Human Resources Directorate at the National Science Foundation, where she first coined the popular acronym STEM.
