Dear colleagues and students,

I am so excited about the work you have done across campus to create, develop, and refine our strategic plan, articulating both our identity and our goals and strategies for the future. Our plan, Green, Gold, and Bold: Green Mountains, Gold Standard, Bold Future, will guide us to serve our students, advance our research, fulfill our land-grant mission, and improve our infrastructure. It challenges us to focus on bold, innovative thinking, driven by our desire for pathbreaking discovery and Our Common Ground values.

I’m delighted to share that, this weekend, UVM’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved our new strategic plan, along with our revised mission and vision statements. This is, indeed, a moment to celebrate. I’m proud that the plan we created honors and elevates UVM’s distinctive character and our commitment to improving our communities and the world around us. I am grateful for the support of our Trustees to move forward.

Forged by hundreds of years of exceptional students, extraordinary faculty and staff, and impactful alumni, UVM makes a difference in the world every day. The work of our people inspires us to forge brave, new paths for the future. I encourage you to read through Green, Gold, and Bold and to begin imagining how the work in your area and your expertise may benefit our efforts. Our pillars will guide us to:

  • Forge Bold Futures: Student Connection, Purpose, and Impact
  • Study What Matters: Values-Driven Learning, Research, and Practice
  • Create Opportunity: Access, Engagement, and Partnerships
  • Enable Excellence: Campus Community, Systems, and Infrastructure

Launching our new strategic plan wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our incredible strategic planning committee. We owe them a debt of gratitude for offering their time and talents to help lead this process and bring our campus community together—inspiring each of you to think about what is possible for a better future.

This truly collaborative process included over 50 listening sessions that reached over 1,000 campus community members. Thank you for your engagement throughout the process. You shaped our goals, our strategies, and the ideas and language that fuel our upward trajectory.

Our campus leaders will be meeting later this month to start discussions on how we align our work and build synergy across the university to fulfill our great mission. This process will call for Strategic Alignment Plans. Our collaboration and partnership on this plan have only just begun!

Together, we will create a great future for the University of Vermont and all of the people and communities we touch.

With gratitude and great hope for the future,

Dr. Marlene Tromp
