Flatten boxes

On opening day of the residence halls, we ask students to recycle their cardboard boxes.

Flatten cardboard boxes and recycle them at designated areas outside each residence hall. The areas are marked with signs and screened off with orange snow fencing.

Throughout the Opening Weekend, the UVM Recycling crew will be on hand to service the cardboard areas on a regular basis.  Cardboard is trucked to temporary storage areas, then on the following Monday it is delivered to the Chittenden Solid Waste District Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) where it is baled and processed before being shipped to market.

Last year, over five tons of corrugated cardboard was collected for recycling during Opening Weekend!

Unfortunately, we are unable to recycle styrofoam or plastic packaging materials, so these items must be thrown in the trash. Signs direct new students and parents on how to separate materials properly.
