The Class of ’67 Award is presented to the senior student who has been active in student activities, has received university recognition in a varsity sport, and/or has been elected to an office in a recognized student activity. This year’s award goes to Samantha Bjorklun (she/her).
Sam Bjorklun, simply put, has flourished. A first-generation college student, the Environmental Sciences major had to forge much of her own way to navigate the undergraduate experience. Despite this and through grit, resilience, and brilliant intellection, Bjorklun carved her place in the university community and made a lasting impact for future students.
During her time at UVM, Bjorklun has been involved with a number of research opportunities, serving as both a research assistant, an undergraduate researcher, and with community service experiences including the Vermont Flood Disaster Relief Efforts in the summer of 2023.
Her involvement goes beyond the classroom, though. Bjorklun has served as an officer in the Society for Chicanos and Native Americans in Sciences, a member of the Horticulture Club, Mixed-Identity Student Association, Asian Student Union, UVM Beekeepers, and as a Resident Advisor,
Bjorklun’s wide-reaching experience across campus has allowed her to impact her peers and the greater UVM community in both the classroom and co-curricular experiences.
“In adversity's embrace, I forged resilience and built a community,” reflects Bjorklun. “With UVM’s support, it represented fertile ground that nurtured my hidden potential to bloom.”
