Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I am proud to report that the most recent National Science Foundation (NSF) ranking of research universities places UVM among the top 100 public institutions in the nation. The ranking is based on volume of research activity, which—thanks to you—has grown steadily on our campus in recent years.

As number 85 among 415 public institutions, UVM boasts an impressive and far-reaching portfolio of advanced research including projects that touch on every element of our commitment to healthy societies and a healthy environment. What’s more, the increasing number of undergraduates who benefit from hands-on research opportunities early in their academic careers helps to set them up for success at UVM and far into the future. Considering the significant portion of our research portfolio that seeks to improve quality of life, economic conditions, and climate in Vermont, UVM’s vibrant research agenda buoys our progress towards fulfillment of our Land Grant mission.

I commend every faculty member, student, and staff member who contributes to our research mission. Our latest ranking is the result of your tireless efforts writing grant proposals, recruiting high quality researchers, attending to your labs at all hours, and ensuring that our research facilities can support this important work. I would especially like to thank the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), led by Vice President Kirk Dombrowski, for the team’s unwavering commitment to the research infrastructure that allows UVM to thrive.

NSF’s recognition of UVM among the nation’s premier research universities is a milestone for our entire community to celebrate. We are ascending thanks to you.

Sincerely,

Suresh V. Garimella
President
