Faculty Present Research at Larner College of Medicine Teaching Academy Snow Season Retreat
Dr. Elizabeth Sargent, Dr. Holly Whitcomb, and Dr. Paula Smith presented "Interprofessional Case-Based Learning with DPT and DNP Learners: Perspectives and collaboration in the development of clinical reasoning skills," which was the evolution of a request for Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) faculty to instruct Doctor of Nursing Practice students in tests for musculoskeletal pain conditions. The faculty involved in the effort identified a need for a co-curricular design for interprofessional clinical learning, rather than skills instruction, for the group. Working in small interprofessional groups through cases presenting musculoskeletal pain, the learners from each discipline could demonstrate their clinical expertise and teach critical decision-making skills to the other field. Students who participated reported increased self-efficacy in understanding their roles and benefits of collaborative practice. Results were utilized to enhance and update the curriculum to maximize competency achievement.
Justine Dee, PT, M.S., OCS and Paula Smith, PT, M.A.S., D.P.T., GCS, presented an ethnographic approach illustrating how a sense of belongingness fostered clinical education success for a student who is deaf. The American Physical Therapy Association affirms the need for the physical therapy profession to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and practice, which requires DPT programs and clinicians to educate and prepare students of all capabilities to become successful clinicians.
