Masters of Science in Pharmacology

We offer both thesis-based and non-thesis(course only) Master of Science degrees. The goals of our program are to establish core knowledge in pharmacology, to understand hypothesis based approaches, to train in a variety of techniques and to foster analytical and independent thinking to evaluate research results.

Thesis-based M.S.

Body

The thesis-based M.S. program requires 30 credits: at least 15 credits in coursework and 9-15 credits in Master's Thesis Research (PHRM 6391). Research interests include cardiovascular pharmacology, cerebrovascular pharmacology, physiology, neurovascular coupling, signal transduction, and medicinal chemistry. Students may select thesis advisors from within the Pharmacology Department faculty or from other departments throughout UVM with the approval of the program director. MS students have done their thesis work in Genetics, Psychology, Psychiatry and Medicine, giving a wide range of options. Thesis-track students must write and defend a thesis.

The typical time for completion of all 30 credits is 2 to 2.25 years for a Thesis-based Pharmacology MS degree, however the degree can be spread out for up to five years from admissions date.

Course-only M.S.

Body

The course-only M.S. program requires 30 coursework credits without a thesis or defense. Core courses are mandatory, while electives can be chosen from various departments throughout UVM. Students in the course-only track may also gain research experience by taking our Pharmacological Techniques course (PHRM 6391).

The typical time for completion of all 30 credits is 1.5-2 years for a non-thesis track Pharmacology MS degree, however the degree can be spread out for up to five years from admissions date.

Accelerated Master's in Pharmacology

Body

UVM undergraduates should consider our Accelerated Master's Program (AMP).  The AMP program allows students to obtain up to 9 graduate credits while also applying these credits towards their Bachelor's Degree. Students should apply for admission into the AMP program during their junior year.
