BIO

Dr. Sarah Schlein, MD DiMM, FAWM, is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine. Her academic and clinical career has been shaped by a deep-rooted passion for effective teaching, mentorship, and novel subspecialty contributions to the field of Emergency and Wilderness Medicine. She is the director of wilderness medicine education for the Department of Emergency Medicine, running courses for the medical school, residency, and starting and directing a Fellowship in Wilderness Medicine. She provides patient care and medical education in both major academic hospitals and critical access hospitals. She holds local, national, and international recognition for scholarship and leadership that impacts innovative courses, fellowships, conferences, medical school courses, medical societies, academic journals, statewide policy changes, and deeply fulfilling mentoring at all levels of learners from pre-medical undergraduate, medical students, residents, post-residency fellows, and faculty. Her ongoing peer-reviewed publications as both first and senior author, as well as my award for excellence in peer review in service to an academic journal, are evidence of major contributions to wilderness medicine and gender equity. She has a deep commitment to clinical practice, enabling her to share her passion for medicine and compassionate patient care with learners and mentees. I am thankful every day that my work combines my love for medicine, rural emergency care, wilderness environments, medical education, and working with a compassionate and talented team.  The most rewarding parts of my career have been in roles of mentorship, leadership, and contributing to a thriving clinical environment for all my co-workers, learners, and patients. I hope that my patients feel I have truly listened to their stories with respect and openness. I am certain that I have learned more from my patients and students than I have taught them.
