Caitlin Haxel

BIO

Dr. Caitlin Haxel is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology providing pediatric cardiology education and clinical preceptorship of medical students, pediatric residents, neonatal and maternal fetal medicine fellows. She is an institutional and regional expert in prenatal diagnosis and management of congenital heart disease (CHD). She is leading and contributing to institutional and regional scholarship to improve rates of prenatal CHD diagnosis in Vermont and New England; improve understanding of prenatal CHD counseling; and develop programs for psychosocial support for pregnant mothers with prenatal CHD diagnoses.

Awards and Achievements

• Selected as the first Director of Fetal Cardiology at the Golisano Children's Hospital at the University of Vermont Health.
• Co-chair of the Quality Improvement Committee and Executive Board Member of the New England Congenital Cardiology Association (NECCA), a regional professional organization.
• Awarded the first Pediatric Department Research Grant ($50,000 funding over 2 years) to develop a virtual parent-peer mentorship program to reduce distress after receiving a prenatal CHD diagnosis.
• Site principal investigator at the University of Vermont Medical Center for a NICHD funded international multi-site surveillance and treatment study (Surveillance and Treatment to Prevent Fetal Atrioventricular Block Likely to Occur Quickly - STOP-BLOQ) focused on prevention of fetal atrioventricular heart block.
• Best Oral Abstract Award at the 14th Phoenix Fetal Cardiology Symposium (November 2024)
• Selected for the Section on Hospice and Palliative Medicine Poster/Abstract Award at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference (October 2022).
