Trainees are experimental and clinical psychologists mentored by NIH-supported experts in substance abuse, behavioral economics, and pharmacology. They participate in seminars, courses, and grant writing training. Over 96% of graduates secure research-focused careers and become independent investigators. The average age at first R01 award (2000-2010) was 34.6, ahead of the 2015 NIH average of 42.2. The program currently supports seven predoctoral and seven postdoctoral fellowships.
Predoctoral Fellowships
Predoctoral fellows are full-time graduate students in UVM's Department of Psychological Science, with joint faculty appointments in psychiatry. The program lasts four to five years, culminating in a PhD in general/experimental or clinical psychology. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in psychology, behavior analysis, or related fields. Selection is based on academic record and dedication to substance abuse research. Funding includes stipends, tuition, healthcare, and travel support from NIH awards and UVM.
Postdoctoral Associates
Postdoctoral associates conduct independent research under a VCBH faculty mentor at designated sites for 2–3 years. Candidates must hold a doctorate in psychology, behavior analysis, or related fields (residency restrictions may apply) and be committed to substance abuse research. Selection is based on academic record and career dedication. Salaries follow NIH stipend levels (PGY 1–7) and are supported by NIH Training Awards, commensurate with experience.
