Clearing Browser Cache

Quick instructions

In most desktop web browsers, to open menus used to clear your cache, cookies, and history, you can press:

  • Windows: Ctrl + Shift + Delete 
  • macOS: Command(⌘) + Shift + Delete

If this successfully opens the menu to clear browsing data, you may need to select options for what to clear and what time range. You generally should select at least cache and cookies and the maximum time range possible. (Options will depend on your browser.)

If this shortcut doesn’t work, follow the specific instructions for your browser in the section below.

  • If you’re unsure what browser version you’re using – locate the Help menu and look for About [browser name].
  • If you don’t see instructions below for your specific version or browser, search your browser’s Help menu for “clear cache“.

Browser specific instructions

Chrome

  1. In the browser bar, enter:
    chrome://settings/clearBrowserData
  2. Select Cookies and other site data from the list. You can leave the other options unchecked.
  3. From the Time Range drop-down menu, select All time.
  4. Click Clear data.
  5. Fully close and re-open Chrome.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Firefox

  1. Click the Library button then select History > Clear Recent History.
    • If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to make it visible.
  2. From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu, select Everything.
  3. Under History, select the following:
    • Browsing & Download History
    • Cookies
    • Cache
  4. Click OK. Close all browser windows and re-open the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Safari

  1. While in Safari, select History > Clear History at the top of the screen.
  2. From the Clear drop-down menu, select all history.
  3. Click Clear History, then close and reopen the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Microsoft Edge

  1. In the browser bar, enter:
    edge://settings/clearBrowserData
  2. Select the following:
    • Browsing history
    • Download history
    • Cookies and other site data
    • Cached images and files
  3. From the Time Range drop-down menu, select All time.
  4. Click Clear now, then close and reopen the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Microsoft Edge (Legacy)

  1. From the Edge menu (ellipsis in the top right corner), select Settings.
  2. Click Choose what to clear under Clear browsing data.
  3. Select the following:
    • Browsing history
    • Cookies and saved website data
    • Cache data and files
    • Download history
  4. Click Clear, then close and reopen the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Internet Explorer 11

  1. From the Tools or Safety menu, select Delete browsing history.
    • If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to make it visible.
  2. Deselect Preserve Favorites website data, and select:
    • Temporary Internet files or Temporary Internet files and website files
    • Cookies or Cookies and website data
    • History
  3. Click Delete. Close all browser windows and re-open the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Opera

  1. From the Opera menu, select Settings, and then Delete Private Data.
  2. In the dialog box that opens, select the items you want to clear, and then
  3. Click Delete. Close all browser windows and re-open the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Android

Note: The steps to clear your cache, cookies, and history may differ depending on the model of your Android device and your preferred browser.

You should be able to clear your cache and data from your application management settings menu:

  1. Go to Settings and choose Apps or Application Manager.
  2. Swipe to the All tab.
  3. In the list of installed apps, find and tap your web browser. Tap Clear Data and then Clear Cache. Close all browser windows and re-open the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.

Apple iOS

The following steps apply to the newest version of Safari for iOS. If you need instructions for older versions, you might find them in Apple Support’s page: Safari web settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open your Settings app.
  2. Tap Safari.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data and confirm. Close all browser windows and re-open the browser.

You must fully quit and relaunch your browser to complete the cache-clearing process.
