A central goal of the Humanities Center is to strengthen the humanities and fine arts by bringing colleagues from across campus together for discussion and critical reflection on important issues in public and intellectual life. These things can happen through formal means, such as through conferences, performances, shows, and talks, but also through less formal means, such as collegial gatherings, meals, and other informal activities. Recognizing the importance of these informal collegial relationships and gatherings in nurturing and inspiring our scholarly and creative activities, the Humanities Center is pleased to announce a new program aimed to support the creation of multi-disciplinary collegial networks and interest groups.
Cultivating Multi-Disciplinary Collegial Networks
Do you work on a theme and have interest in getting together with colleagues from around campus to exchange ideas, discuss your research and teaching, or make plans for collaborative research and teaching on that theme? Then propose the creation of a Multi-disciplinary Collegial Network.
The Award
Each academic year, the Humanities Center will provide up to $750 each for eight groups to support shared meals or other group activities.
Eligibility
Applicant cohorts must include at least five UVM faculty members (lecturers and adjuncts included) from a minimum of two academic disciplines or interdisciplinary fields. At least two of those members must come from traditional humanities or fine arts fields (Arts, Classics, English, German and Russian, History, Music, Philosophy, Religion, Romance Languages, Theater, and other programs centrally concerned with language and culture). Networks are encouraged to invite members from other departments and units across the university. There is no maximum size of a network; they can be as large as you can make them.
How to apply
Proposals should be submitted to uvmhc@uvm.edu. There is no deadline, applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
Program requirements:
- Collegial networks must meet at least three times during an academic year.
- Funds must be spent on joint activities. Suggested activities include meals, snacks at meetings, off-campus fieldtrips, conduct of a workshop, etc. Funds cannot be used to purchase hard goods. This program is meant to support collegial activities of faculty members.
- Funds must be spent or committed by June 30, the end of the fiscal year awarded. Any unspent funds will not roll forward into the next fiscal year.
- The network organizer is responsible for the management of these funds.
- By June 30, the organizer will submit a report of the network’s activities to the Humanities Center.
- Networks can reapply each year, with proposals due September 15. Awards will be given for up to three consecutive years.
