What We Do

After over 50 years the Program still holds true to its mission of supporting the integration of the undergraduate experience into innovative and hands on experiences in environmental challenges.

To that end the Program now supports a limited number of high-impact initiative and events, and continues to manage UVM’s Natural Areas

What We Support

Fellowship in Restoration Ecologies and Cultures (FREC): A recently launched program at the University of Vermont, supported in part by a Thoreau Foundation grant and the Cotyledon Fund, FREC aims to produce leaders for the emerging green workforce, individuals who will play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. The program focuses on restoring one of the UVM Natural Areas, Carse Wetlands located in Hinesburg, Vermont.

"Talks and Walks on UVM’s Wild Side," is an ongoing series that highlights field research conducted across UVM's Natural Areas, ranging from mountain terrains to lake ecosystems. UVM scientists present their research during monthly Tuesday evening seminars, covering diverse ecological topics such as alpine plant biodiversity and wetland restoration. On the Saturday following each seminar, alumni from UVM's Field Naturalist graduate program lead field walks at UVM Natural Areas. This series is supported by the Environmental Program and  Office of the Vice President for Research.

Ian Worley Award - This award is funded by Environmental Program Alum Gary Simpson in recognition of the profound impact that former Environmental Program Director Dr. Ian Worley had on him and the thousands of UVM students Ian inspired. Its aim is to provide undergraduate students with funds to engage in novel and creative environmental pursuits outside the classroom.
