Center for Teaching and Learning
When Brightspace's Assignment and Grade Book tools are set up well, students know exactly what’s expected of them and when work is due, while you have one central place to keep track of everything.

Brightspace’s Assignment and Grade Book tools are designed to support one of the most ongoing parts of teaching: collecting, reviewing, and responding to student work.

Collect Assignments

Body

Students can submit work through the Brightspace Assignments tool. The tool supports a wide range of file types, including documents, images, audio, and video files. You can also choose whether students upload multiple submissions or just one.

Because the Assignments tool is directly connected to the Brightspace Grade Center, you can manage submissions, track completion, and grade all student work in one place. Students can also view their own submission history, helping them confirm that their work has been successfully submitted.

This UVM Knowledge Base Article provides step-by-step directions for creating assignments.

This 11-minute video walks through the assignment setup process and demonstrates how to use a Student View Account to verify your settings before students begin submitting work.

To learn how you can set up a Student View account, see this UVM Knowledge Base article

Note: Remember to use the Due Dates setting on all assignments, quizzes, and time-bound discussions. Due Dates automatically appear on students’ Brightspace calendars and help them keep track of their work in your course and across all of their classes.

Grade Student Work

Body

There are several ways to grade student work and provide feedback in Brightspace. You can annotate submissions directly, assess work with rubrics, add text, audio or video comments, or combine multiple feedback methods.

There are three primary ways to grade in Brightspace:

  • Within the activity itself (Assignments, Discussions, or Quizzes)
  • Through the Grade Book
  • Using Quick Eval.

Quick Eval provides a convenient dashboard that allows you to immediately access and grade all submissions that need to be graded across all courses.

This video recording of a CTL Grading and Feedback workshop (60 minutes with chapter navigation) walks you through Brightspace’s grading and feedback tools and demonstrates ways to provide feedback to students.

This UVM Knowledge Base article provides instructions for grading assignments, discussions, and quizzes in Brightspace.

Tracking Student Progress

Body

Brightspace includes a robust set on analytics tools that can help you monitor student engagement and performance throughout the semester. This data is helpful in identifying patterns of student behavior and spotting students who may need additional support and intervene before they fall too far behind.

This CTL web page links to several video tutorials about how to access and use data in Class Progress, Discussion, Quizzes and Grades.

Set Up Your Grade Book

Body

Using Brightspace’s Grade Book to track and communicate progress to students is important during a shift to remote teaching. Students will need easy access to their grades across all their courses and using Brightspace’s built-in tool to support that access.

Some instructors find setting up the Grade Book for the first time a little tricky. If you are new to the Grade Book, we recommend that you:

  • Read this UVM Knowledge Base article, which provides detailed information on setting up your Grade Book and managing grades before starting the set up process.
  • Use the built-in Grade Book Set Up Wizard when prompted. It will guide you through the key decisions required for your course grading structure.
  • Contact ctl@uvm.edu if you have questions or would like assistance reviewing your Grade Book settings.
