Students at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences will have the opportunity to study public health from a global perspective through travel courses to Bangladesh, Uganda and Mexico this winter and spring.

Mexico
In March of 2011, Prof. Carol Buck-Rolland (nursing) travels with students to Mexico for a three credit course titled “Exploring Health Care and Culture: Learning through Immersion in Oaxaca.” The group will meet a diverse array of Mexican teachers, activists, migrants, practitioners and humanitarian enthusiasts during their trip, helping them to understand health care practices in cross-cultural contexts. Uganda
A service-learning course to Uganda over winter break emphasizes hands-on learning at Kamuli Mission Hospital and Nursing School and Mbulamuti Health Center. Students work within the hospital wards, at immunization clinics and with midwives while studying topics such as epidemiology, environmental health and health issues for women and children. The focus is on developing relationships and addressing community concerns while developing skills and achieving social change. The six credit course is led by Prof. Sarah Abrams (nursing). Bangladesh
Over winter break, Prof. Rycki Maltby (nursing) is offering a six credit course on community and public health nursing in Bangladesh in collaboration with Dr. Omar Rahman and Dr. Rita Yusef at the Independent University. From December 27, 2010, to January 23, 2011, students will study public health from a village setting and learn how to adapt research agendas to the needs of a developing nation with rapidly changing health issues.

A summer interdisciplinary course, titled Public Health in a Global Context: Bangladesh, will explore the ideologies, policies and practices of public health practice in rural and urban Bangladesh. Through lectures, discussions and field study, students explore public health practice in rural and urban Bangladesh. The two credit course runs from June 1 – June 30, 2011.
