College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean Noma Anderson has announced the appointment of Paula Deming, Ph.D., as Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS).

In this new role, Deming will provide leadership, vision, and strategic planning for research and scholarly initiatives in the College, and offer support to the dean, associate dean, and department chairs in faculty recruitment, mentorship, retention, evaluation and promotion. Deming will also guide administrative staff in grant management.

“The University and the College are evolving such that college leadership in research and faculty affairs is needed for consistent and recognized engagement between the University and the College constituents,” said Anderson of the appointment.

An Endowed Professor of Health Sciences, Deming most recently served as chair of the Department of Biomedical and Health Sciences and director of the Medical Laboratory Science master’s degree program. Her area of expertise is in molecular pathogenesis, and her research explores molecular mechanisms of signal transduction to identify biomarkers and new therapeutic targets for human diseases such as cancer.

Deming earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in medical technology from the University of Vermont, and a doctoral degree in molecular and cellular pathology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Professor Eyal Amiel will serve as interim chair of the Department of Biomedical and Health Sciences while a search to fill the position is conducted.
