As a researcher, Safwan Wshah’s interests inhabit the intersection of machine learning theory and its practical applications. “My primary mission is to advance the field by improving the adaptability and generalization of existing methods,” he says, “with the ultimate goal of enabling high-quality, effective solutions to a wide range of real-world problems.”

The Assistant Professor in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at UVM will make significant strides in his goal, thanks to his recent Fulbright Award. “Through my research,” he says, “I aim to develop innovative approaches that can be applied across diverse domains, empowering businesses, organizations, and individuals to make better, data-driven decisions and achieve their goals more efficiently.”

Christian Skalka, Chair of the Computer Science department at UVM, is thrilled about the work that Wshah is doing. “Dr. Wshah will be applying machine learning to the challenges of drought and flood prediction in the Jordan River Basin. Drought and flood prediction is a critical concern of millions of people in this region. Dr. Wshah will also be working with other scholars at Jordanian Universities to improve their educational programs in machine learning and artificial intelligence. He will be an ambassador for the expertise and values of CEMS and UVM, working to improve society at a global scale.” Read on for Wshah’s thoughts on this honor and what’s ahead.

What interests you most about your research right now?

SW: Recently, I have been focusing on the intersection of computer vision, remote sensing, and geospatial analytics. Specifically, my current work focuses on developing advanced techniques to analyze and understand cross-view imagery captured from a variety of sources, including ground-based, aerial, and satellite platforms. By leveraging the unique characteristics of these different views, I aim to develop more accurate and robust models for predicting and mitigating natural disasters, such as droughts, floods, and harmful algae blooms, as well as for characterizing key properties of snow. In addition, I am actively exploring innovative approaches for object geo-localization using multiple imagery sources, including methods that leverage deep learning and other advanced machine learning techniques. Through my research, I hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of the world around us, and to develop new tools and technologies that can help address some of the most pressing challenges facing society today.

What do you love about teaching?

SW: For me, teaching is more than just a job – it's a passion. I find great joy in sharing my knowledge and expertise with others, and I believe that the process of teaching and learning can be an incredibly rewarding experience for both students and instructors alike. I particularly enjoy the moments when students engage with the material and ask thought-provoking questions, as these interactions allow for deeper understanding and can lead to new insights and discoveries. Teaching is also a source of stress relief for me, as it provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment that can be difficult to find in other areas of life. Ultimately, I see teaching as a way to give back to the community and to inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators in my field.

What does winning this award mean to you?

SW: Being named a Fulbright global scholar awardee represents a high honor and recognition for the work I have done at UVM, as well as a tremendous opportunity to expand my horizons and pursue new directions in my research. Over the next 5-10 years, I am excited to dig deeper into my field, exploring innovative approaches and technologies to tackle some of the most pressing challenges.

What projects are you looking forward to working on in the future?

SW: As a researcher, I am driven by a deep desire to make a positive impact on the world around me. I am particularly excited to work on projects that have a real-world impact, improving safety, security, and overall quality of life for individuals and communities alike. Whether it's developing new technologies to enhance public safety, leveraging data to better understand and address societal challenges, or exploring innovative approaches to sustainable development, I am constantly seeking out opportunities to apply my skills and expertise in meaningful ways. For me, the ultimate reward of my work is knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of others, and I am committed to continuing this mission throughout my career

SW: I truly value the sense of community and collaboration among the people at UVM. It's inspiring to see students, researchers, and faculty members all dedicated to making a positive impact on the university and beyond.
