Lecturer in German

Glenn Levine-West joined the faculty at UVM as a Lecturer of German and is also Professor Emeritus of German at the University of California, Irvine, where he taught for 23 years. He also has worked in several areas of study abroad program administration, most recently serving in Berlin serving as the Faculty Director for the University of California study abroad programs in northern Europe.

At UVM he teaches courses in German language at the introductory level, Germanic and applied linguistics, and German-Jewish literature and culture. Most recently he offered courses in German at the upper-level, on “Jewish Life in Germany from the Middle Ages to the Present” and “From Dialect to Denglish: The (Socio-)Linguistics of the German Speaking World.”

His research focuses on language learning of migrants in Europe, translanguaging and the roles of the first language in second-language learning and teaching, language use and socialization during study abroad, and theoretically and empirically informed approaches to language pedagogy and program direction.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Levine-West is the 2024 Lecturer recipient of UVM’s Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award.
