UVM's Program in French and Italian will expand your language skills while also deeping your knowledge of the many areas of the world where these languages are spoken, including Europe, North America, Africa, and the Carribean. Courses focus on both the current day and a range of historical periods, in addition to language study at all levels. Our faculty are dedicated, experienced teachers who also pursue active research agendas in literary and cultural studies.

Our Courses

In addition to our courses in language study at all levels, we offer a full range of classes on the written works and cultures of the many regions of the world where the languages we teach are spoken. Sample advanced courses in French include French Literature of the Holocaust, The Turn-of-the-Century "Belle Epoque," Francophone Cinema, Quebec Literature and Culture, and French Women Writers of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In Italian, courses include Food Cultures of Italy, Modern Italian Cinema, Italian Poetry, and Diversity in Italian Short Stories
