Senior Lecturer of Chinese

Ying Hu joined the faculty at UVM in 2012. She received her B.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Zhejiang University in China, M.A. in Second Language Studies (with a concentration on Second Language Teaching and Technology) from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology from Michigan State University.

She has taught Chinese as a second/foreign language in a variety of settings, including universities and intensive immersion programs both in China and America. Emphasizing language learners’ cognitive adaptability, contextual sensitivity, and communicative competence, she attaches great importance to metacognitive learning, language-in-situ, and active interactions in her teaching. At UVM, she has taught all levels of core Chinese language courses (1st-year, 2nd-year, 3rd-year, and 4th-year College Chinese), Advanced Reading and Writing, Fundamentals of Chinese Characters, Asian Language Teaching Practicum, Chinese-English Bilingual Communication, Bilingual Learning via TVs and Movies, and so on. She served as the director for the Chinese-English Language Partner Program and a co-director for the Chinese House program for multiple years. She also serves as a faculty supervisor for the Chinese club and a faculty associate for the Center of Teaching and Learning at UVM.

Her research interests revolve around adaptive expertise in advanced knowledge acquisition and application, as well as learning in technology-rich environments. In the context of foreign language learning, her research focuses on technology-assisted language learning, second language pragmatics, language learner epistemological mindsets, as well as linguistically and culturally inclusive teaching.
