Advising Questions about Study Abroad

Before meeting with the Office of International Education to discuss study abroad plans, students should meet with their professional or faculty advisor. The following are helpful suggestions and questions that you should be thinking about:

  • Bring your Study Abroad Academic Planning Form.
  • Outline your longer-term goals and how a study abroad may plan into those opportunities.

  • What progression of classes must I complete for my degree and how do these relate to my plans/timeline for studying abroad?

  • Do I need to be on UVM’s campus for any courses in my major?

  • What flexibility do I have to take general electives, courses within my major, and Catamount core courses while abroad?

  • How do I understand how courses taken abroad will transfer back to UVM?

  • Think about and discuss the skills that you might need for your longer-term goals, and what skills you might acquire through a global experience.

After students have met with an academic advisor, they should think about how they plan to engage with the Office of International Education. You should plan on doing the following:

  • Attend a Study Abroad 101session

  • Explore programs in GoAbroad

  • Learn more about academic offerings and course transfers through a deeper study of programs of interest
