BIO

Stephanie Hurley is a Professor of Ecological Landscape Design in the Department of Agriculture, Landscape, and Environment and serves as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at the University of Vermont. Dr. Hurley teaches a large lecture course in Landscape Design Fundamentals and a service-learning based Ecological Landscape Design Studio.

Dr. Hurley’s research focuses on green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), emphasizing water quality and hydrologic performance of stormwater bioretention systems in urban and rural settings. She has collaborated on projects to make design recommendations for bioretention raingardens and gravel wetlands, including use of soil media mixes that reduce phosphorus pollution. Other work includes: municipal and residential surveys regarding GSI implementation, aesthetics, and maintenance; and mapping the equitable (and inequitable) distribution of GSI in U.S. Cities. Dr. Hurley also collaborates with UVM’s Institute for Agroecology where she has focused on agroecological design for urban and peri-urban farms as well as the use of photo-visualizations to promote climate adaptation practices.
