BIO
Dr. Juliano Marques is a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Vermont, where he investigates the market, consumer, and business drivers needed to accelerate agricultural diversification and strengthen rural resilience in the U.S. Corn Belt. An agricultural economist with experience across academia, extension, and international development, his work focuses on creating viable markets for diversified and specialty crop systems through consumer insight, value chain coordination, entrepreneurship, and strategic market development.
Prior to joining UVM, Dr. Marques held a postdoctoral appointment at Purdue University, where he contributed to the USDA-funded Diverse Corn Belt project and co-led the development of risk management tools for specialty crop farmers. His research spans market analysis, consumer behavior, willingness-to-pay studies, adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, value-added business planning, and stakeholder engagement across food systems.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with producers, agribusinesses, policymakers, NGOs, and international partners in projects ranging from agricultural diversification in the Midwest to olive sector revitalization in Northern Iraq and rural development initiatives in Brazil. His work combines rigorous research with practical solutions that help farmers, organizations, and communities build economically viable and environmentally sustainable food systems.
Outside academia, Juliano enjoys mountain biking, skiing, and exploring Vermont with his family.
