A step-by-step guide
Below is a step-by-step guide to how to get through the disability accommodation process for health sciences students at UVM. A "health sciences student" is anyone who is enrolled at the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) or the Larner College of Medicine (LCOM).
- If a step is labeled "Student", it means that the student should complete it.
- If a step is labeled "Coordinator", it means that the Coordinator will complete the step.
- If a step is labeled "Both", the Coordinator and the Student must work together to complete the step.
Step: | Action: | Role |
---|---|---|
1 | The student submits a Getting Started form via the online Student Portal. | Student |
2 | After submitting their Getting Started form, the student schedules a meeting with the Health Sciences Disability Coordinator. | Student |
3 | The Coordinator and the student meet and discuss the student’s disability and the functional limitations it causes. | Both |
4 | If the student has documentation of their disability, they upload that documentation to the SAS Student Portal or email it to access@uvm.edu. If the student does not have documentation, they are still eligible for provisional disability accommodations, which last for one semester. | Student |
5 | The Coordinator determines the student’s eligibility for accommodations. The Coordinator can identify accommodations for the student’s academic and clinical needs. | Coordinator |
6 | The Coordinator then reviews any clinical accommodations with relevant LCOM or CNHS faculty to ensure there’s no fundamental changes to the course or clinical setting. Faculty must approve the accommodations before they can go into effect. | Coordinator |
7 | Next, the Coordinator lets the student know which accommodations have been approved. | Coordinator |
8 | Finally, the student sends their accommodations letter out to relevant faculty in LCOM or the CNHS. The Coordinator will tell the student which instructors to send it to. | Student |
9 | The student must meet with each course faculty/clerkship director to discuss their accommodations. | Student |
