The University of Vermont (UVM) values the full participation of students with disabilities in all aspects of university life, including residential living. As a residential college, the housing experience is a key part of a UVM education.
Policy Overview
Body
- Housing accommodations are provided based on documented needs, not personal preferences. For example, a single room for studying (due to ADHD or a learning disability) is considered a preference, not a necessity.
- Single rooms or specific housing accommodations are granted only when documentation shows a significant need that cannot be met in standard housing.
Documentation Requirements
Body
Students requesting accommodations must submit documentation\ from a healthcare provider. Documentation should be submitted via:
- Student Portal
- UVM File Transfer: filetransfer.uvm.edu
- Email: access@uvm.edu
Note: Documentation and/or care provider recommendations do not guarantee accommodations.
Deadlines for 2025-26
Body
- Returning Students: Submit by February 25, 2025 to ensure accommodations by Fall 2024. Late requests will be reviewed but may not be implemented on time.
- Incoming Students: Submit by June 1, 2025. Late requests will be reviewed but are not guaranteed.
- Spring Admits and Transfer Students: Submit by November 15, 2025.
- Contract Release Requests: If granted, on-campus housing is not guaranteed if deadlines are missed.
Important Considerations
Body
- Quiet spaces: Residence halls are communal and may not provide distraction-free environments. Campus spaces outside residence halls can be used for quieter study settings.
- Specific roommate requests: Not considered a reasonable accommodation.
Review Process
Body
Requests are reviewed by the ADA Housing Committee, which includes OAS staff and representatives from Student Health Services, CAPS, Residential Life, and Dining.
Late Requests
Body
If your need arises after the deadline, email access@uvm.edu. Efforts will be made to meet late needs, but availability may be limited. Eligible students may be placed on a priority waitlist, if necessary.
