Section Description

This course is an introduction to the history of motion pictures following the break up of the Hollywood studio system following the United States Supreme Court Paramount Decision in 1948. In the course of our study, we will consider the major cultural, social, and political forces that were necessary for the development of film into the preeminent form of popular entertainment in the twentieth century. We will examine the aesthetic and technological influences that led to the formation and dominance of classical Hollywood cinema, a cinematic style that significantly shaped film production internationally. Other national cinemas and genres that arose outside of mainstream Hollywood production will also be examined. The primary objective of the course is to provide students with an introductory understanding of the history of classical Hollywood cinema and other national cinemas in the twentieth century as well as to sharpen skills in critical film analysis.

Section Expectation

This is an online course, which means that we will not meet as a group synchronously. Instead, you will go through the material at your own pace though there will be due dates throughout the course.
