My laboratory is located in the Department of Biochemistry in the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. We use the tools of biochemistry and biophysics to study the mechanisms of genome maintenance and evolution. Our model systems include bacteriophages, bacteria, yeast, and human cells. We are particularly interested in mechanisms of homologous recombination (HR). Specific interests of our lab include: (1) Roles of HR in microbial ecology and the response to environmental change. (2) How defects in HR may contribute to the etiology of human cancer. (3) We are also interested in cell cycle regulation of histone gene expression, and how defects in this process may contribute to genome instability and cancer.
