Request Allocation

Are you a student?

Body

Do NOT fill out this form. Your PI or a professor must request the allocation, get approved, and then add you as a user.

Applying for Your Own Allocation

Body

To request an allocation, you must be either a Principal Investigator (PI) or an IT support person working with a PI who is a user of the VACC. PIs can add additional users after approval.

Information you must provide

Body

The VACC application form requires you to provide:

  • a title for your research or project
  • a one-paragraph description (in lay-person language) of your research
  • the types of computing resources you think you will need to support your research:
It is helpful if you can describe your specific requirements (e.g., required disk storage, distributing computing or shared memory requirements, and required software). However, it is also acceptable to state that you don't know what your requirements are.
  • your tier choice:
The VACC is supported by a tiered, pay-per-use policy. All users of the VACC elect to join (or are placed into) one of three tiers on a yearly basis. For more information about Tiers and fees, please see our Payment page.
  • your funding source(s):
If you are requesting a free account (Tier 1), you do not need to provide this information. If you request a paid account (Tier 2 or 3), you must provide funding information. You may pay with both grant and departmental funding. For grants, we require the grant title and number; for departmental funding, we require a chartstring or the name of the person to contact for this information.

For more information about Tier fees and funding options, see Cost and Payment.

Sponsoring Other Users of Your Allocation

Body

Once a PI completes the application form, they can grant access to other users on the research team — what we call "sponsored users." To add a sponsored user:

  • get your sponsored user's NetID by using the instructions here (don't guess the NetID — you may grant access to the wrong person)
  • go to your VACC Dashboard
  • see the "Sponsored Users" heading at the top of the right-hand column
  • click the green "add" button directly below the heading
  • fill out the form and click Submit

Your request will be sent to the Cluster administrators. Sponsored users are notified by email when their accounts have been processed. If your new sponsored user does not have account access within two (2) days, please contact Andrea Elledge at aelledge@uvm.edu.

Data created by the sponsored user should go in shared directories, not home directories, where it will be deleted when the user leaves. The PI is responsible for the integrity of their data and must take steps to guarantee the data is preserved.

Sponsoring an External User?

Body

If you are a PI and you want to sponsor an external user, you will need to request a UVM NetID for them. Send your request to vacchelp@uvm.edu, including the following for each person who does not have a UVM NetID:

  • full name
  • email address
  • affiliation

Know who you are sponsoring.

It is your responsibility to know who you are sponsoring as a user and to understand the research the user will conduct using the VACC.

As the person most knowledgeable about the work, you must stay alert for any irregularities or abnormal circumstances that might indicate an export of technical data from the VACC is destined for an inappropriate end use, end user, or destination. Ask yourself, WHAT is being exported? WHERE is it being exported? WHO will be receiving the export? WHY is the user ordering it?

If you have questions or concerns, please get in touch with our Research Compliance Officer at
exportcontrols@uvm.edu to ensure that all compliance protocols, including any required restricted-party screening and export-control reviews, are addressed.

Warning:

UVM PIs should request that the Office of Research Integrity, conduct restricted-party screening for an individual, and their institution, from any of the following countries of concern: China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, or Cuba. Request can be directed to: exportcontrols@uvm.edu.

UVM PIs may not sponsor individuals affiliated with the following Chinese universities that the DoD considers a threat to national security.

  • Beihang University (formerly Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics)
  • Beijing Institute of Technology
  • Harbin Engineering University
  • Harbin Institute of Technology
  • Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics
  • Nanjing University of Science and Technology
  • Northwestern Polytechnical University

Many other universities, individuals, and entities are on this restricted list.

There are significant restrictions on providing goods or services, including non-public research data, to Iranians and Iranian institutions, even if no funding is provided.
