The UVM Department of Theatre continues its 2011-2012 Season with Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan, with English translation by Eric Bentley. The play runs Nov. 3 – 13 at the Royall Tyler Theatre.

The Good Woman of Setzuan, full of myth, metaphor and music, goodness, greed and gods, is a powerful parable of morality and society. Three gods arrive in Setzuan searching for honesty and goodness, but find only evil and greed. Shen Te, a prostitute, gives the gods shelter for the night, and recognizing her goodness, they give her money for her own shop. But, in the world of Brecht, Shen Te's good fortune only makes her a target for the selfishness of others. She reinvents herself as a male cousin, Shui Ta, who plays tough in the face of evil.

Directed by Peter Jack Tkatch, with musical direction by Tom Cleary, the cast is one of UVM Theatre's largest to date with more than 25 students. Scenery Design is by UVM senior Hannah Brosnan, lighting design by John B. Forbes, and costume design by UVM Senior Kate Fulop.
