Safety is a top priority in any training conducted by the Green Mountain Battalion. We strive to maintain an environment that provides opportunities for learning through applied leadership in a safe and responsible way.

The Green Mountain Battalion, at its heart, is a large family; we all care about the success of one another. The Cadet Batallion Commander, NCOs and officers set high expectations, but provide high amounts of support. There is always a Cadet that can help another in a difficult class, train for the next physical fitness test or offer support with the challenges of balancing ROTC and college life.

The battalion is overseen by an experienced staff of Cadre, led by MAJ Joseph Pittard, Executive Officer and MSG Matthew Lally, Senior Military Science Instructor. Our new Professor of Military Science, MAJ Travis McCracken, will arrive in early October. Cadre help facilitate training and Cadet development by offering guidance, support and unique training opportunities. They ensure safety at all training events and place emphasis on risk mitigation and contingency planning. The battalion promotes individual development and academic success, but it is also home to close friendships and fun.

Burlington, VT

The University of Vermont sits prominently above the city of Burlington and overlooks Lake Champlain to the West. Students who attend the university enjoy the incredible cultural experience of downtown living, with the historical and traditional setting that Vermont offers. Nestled among the Green Mountains and Lake Champlain, the University of Vermont is perfect for students who value outdoor experiences as much as academics. There is world-class skiing just minutes from Burlington and extensive hiking, rock & ice climbing in the nearby mountains.

Special Events for Cadets

Halloween PT is one of many events that the Green Mountain Battalion hosts throughout the year to keep morale in the program high. Other events include the annual Turkey Bowl football tournament, Winter Holiday PT and the prestigious Catamount Cup.

The Green Mountain Battalion places special emphasis on community service. We conduct food drives during the holiday season and maintain a RallyTHON team, which participates in a 12-hour dance marathon to support local children's hospitals and other local, non-profit community organizations. Many Cadets choose to partipacte in extra-curricular volunteer activities outside of ROTC as well, such as working with Vermont Adaptive, the Red Cross, the Josh Pallotta Fund, Inc., and local food banks.

Special Events for Parents

Connor MacDonald ('21) and his parents pose for a photo at the Alumni Reception.

Cadets couldn't be successful without the support of their family, friends, and significant others. The battalion hosts events to welcome these important individuals to join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of the Cadets and meet fellow Green Mountain Battalion families. Reception Day for incoming Cadets and their families, the Alumni Reception and Awards Ceremony are a few main events that friends and family are encouraged to attend.
