If you are coming to the Ropes Course...
What to wear:
Make sure to check the current weather conditions! Layers are always a great idea as it is often about 10 degrees cooler in the forest. Clothes that you can be active in are the best bet. Close-toed shoes are mandatory. Our programs run rain or shine, so you may want to have your rain coat as a backup.
What to bring:
- Each participant must bring a signed medical waiver/liability release (signed by a parent/legal guardian if under 18). This is required for participation.
- We have no water on site. Participants should bring full water bottles.
- Snacks/Lunch. If your group’s program is over lunch time, we will have a break for you all to eat on the course. Please note that there is no trash disposal on the course so be prepared to carry out what you carry in.
- Bug Spray and Sunscreen
- Please leave all valuables at home. We know that you may want your cell phone to take pictures but we ask that you are aware of your usage in order to be present through the program.
What to expect:
Each group will have a unique experience with the UVM Adventure Ropes Course. Generally at the ropes course, your group will begin with fun warm-up activities on a large open field. If your group is larger than twelve you will be broken up into smaller groups and led by facilitators up to the course and through a series of games, problem-solving initiatives, and low and/or high challenge course elements. The specific activities that your group undertakes will depend on goals set by the person who is coordinating your program as well as by the way your group progresses through the early activities.
After most activities, instructors will spend time helping you to process the activity. This time for reflection offers participants the opportunity to take an active role in the learning process.
Where to arrive:
The UVM ARC is located off of the South Burlington bike path between Farrell Park and the Stonehedge Community. Groups park at Farrell Park which has ample parking for buses and cars. The UVM ARC facilitators will meet you at the parking area to begin your day and walk you up to the course. We are able to accommodate participants with mobility limitations through a back entrance if necessary. Directions (PDF).
If your program is at another location...
What to wear:
Be sure to be comfortable in whatever you are wearing. Close-toed shoes are still required for everyone's safety. If your program will be outdoors, make sure you are aware of the days forecast and dress appropriately. It's always helpful to be prepared with layers.
What to bring:
- A waiver may or may not be required for your program. Your program's organizer will let you know. If a medical waiver/liability release is required, each participant must bring a signed copy (signed by a parent/legal guardian if under 18).
- Water/Snacks/Lunch. If your group’s program is over lunch time, we will have a break for you all to eat on the course.
- Bug Spray and Sunscreen (if we will be outside).
- Please leave all valuables at home. We know that you may want your cell phone to take pictures but we ask that you are aware of your usage in order to be present through the program.
What to expect:
Programs away from the course vary significantly. It could be a two hour team bonding event, or a more intensive full day group development program. Your program coordinator should brief you on what to expect.
No matter what, groups should expect to have fun and learn something new. It's helpful to come with an attitude that is truly open to all outcomes and ready to engage. After most activities, instructors will spend time helping you to process the activity. This time for reflection offers participants the opportunity to take an active role in the learning process.
Where to arrive:
Your program's point person will make sure you are at the right place! Ask them if you are unsure of where to meet.
