This is a singular opportunity to lead a dynamic and fast-growing institution that stands at the forefront of addressing some of the most pressing needs and intractable problems of our time.
The provost and senior vice president serves as the chief academic officer of the University of Vermont. Working closely with the president, the deans, the vice provosts, the vice presidents, and other members of the senior leadership team, the provost is responsible for the advancement of all dimensions of academic excellence, including enhancing the University’s intellectual climate, fostering faculty collaboration and development, supporting innovative instruction and scholarship, advancing diversity and inclusion, and creating an outstanding student experience.
As the academic leader of the campus, the provost has direct responsibility for faculty and academic affairs, the colleges and schools, student life and services, the division of intercultural excellence, global educational initiatives, the university libraries, and numerous university-wide offices, centers, and programs including the Osher Center for Integrative Health and the Center for Community News.
The input of the UVM community is essential to this process. With that input, we anticipate beginning national recruitment in April, with the goal of completing the search in early fall 2026. We expect the new provost to begin in January 2027. To support this work, UVM will partner with an executive search firm, WittKieffer, who brings deep expertise in academic leadership searches and important familiarity with UVM developed over many years and several important searches. The provost position profile is being developed by the committee with community input.
