Faculty Development Series

The Center for Teaching & Learning welcomes Michelle K. Smith, PhD, to present "Active Learning in STEM Disciplines: The Benefits of Collaboratively Developing Lessons for the Undergraduate Classroom" - May 20

Dr. Smith will present research on the efficacy of using student learning data to motivate faculty change and addresses questions such as:

1. How can we minimize time investment for faculty, yet engage them in the development of an active learning lesson that positively affects student understanding? and
2. How does involvement in this process influence faculty willingness to try new instructional practices?

You can read more about this event on the CTL website and register for this 90-minute event on May 20 on the CTL Events Calendar.

If you have questions, feel free to write to ctl@uvm.edu.

The Center for Teaching & Learning welcomes the University of Michigan Center for Research on Learning and Teaching Players to UVM for a theater performance and discussion in the Davis Center Silver Maple Ballroom - May 14

The performance, titled "Cuts: Responding to Student Climate Concerns," is about an African-American student who, at the end of an office-hour meeting, tells their instructor about a set of racially problematic comments that were made by students (and ignored by a professor) in another class. This sketch raises issues of how to work with students around climate issues, and discussion is interwoven throughout the performance.

You can read more about this event on the CTL website and register for this three-hour afternoon event on May 14 on the CTL Events Calendar.

Strategies for Making Teaching Evaluations Useful

Two Sessions Offered:
- April 15, 10:30 AM-Noon, Howe Library, room 303
- April 23, 1:00-2:30 PM, Mildred Livak Room, Davis Center, room 419

Teaching evaluations, including student ratings and peer observations, are commonly used in higher education to document teaching effectiveness and to inform decisions regarding hiring, promotion, tenure, and teaching awards. However, methods of evaluating teaching are controversial due to potential biases based on identities such as race and gender, and growing questions regarding the extent to which teaching evaluations measure teaching effectiveness. The purpose of this session will be to consider ways to make peer and student evaluations of teaching useful to faculty; we will consider strategies for improving how the evaluations are conducted as well as how the resulting information is used.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Ever wonder if your curricular and instructional changes are achieving their desired outcomes? Curious about how students are approaching a complex assignment outside of class? Want to know what would make your class more engaging for students?

These are the kinds of questions that serve as the basis for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), which is increasingly being used at institutions of higher education to support faculty members’ professional learning. In partnership with the Office of the Provost, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) recently launched a pilot initiative to support SoTL at UVM. This blog post will provide a brief overview of SoTL along with a description of our pilot initiative. [Learn more about the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning]

Announcing the 2019 Designing for Learning Program
January 7 and 9, 2019
9:00 AM-3:30 PM (lunch included)
Application deadline: November 20, 2018

Do you wish more students would participate in class discussion? Wondering why an old assignment doesn’t produce the results it used to?  Looking for ways to help students overcome obstacles and achieve more in your classes?

The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Writing in the Disciplines program invite you to participate in Designing for Learning, a two-day intensive course design program. Built on research into how people learn, and practices for course design that help engage students and focus on key course goals, the Designing for Learning Program offers opportunities to connect with colleagues, explore teaching resources, and get a personalized teaching consultation. Participating faculty will focus on (re)designing a specific course to address issues such as:

  • modifying an assignment sequence that does not currently “work”
  • increasing the quality and quantity of student participation
  • creating course activities and materials that help students develop difficult to master skills or knowledge areas.

How is the program structured?

We’ll meet as a group for two days, Monday, January 7 and Wednesday, January 9. January 8 is a flexible working day that will allow participants time to apply concepts from day 1 to teaching materials that will be further developed on day 2. Participants will receive continuing support in the form of consultations or observations in the following year.

What have past faculty participants said about this program?

  • “I ended up making several changes to my course in addition to the one I had intended originally. I would highly recommend this program to all faculty!”
  • “The diversity of faculty participants meant that we could hear a useful variety of practical ways to apply Universal Design for Learning principles in different kinds of courses.”
  • “Through this program's lectures, reading assignments, and individual [consultations], I can say that I now understand what Universal Design for Learning is and how to apply in my own teaching. It was great to discuss with other faculty members in different fields because they bring new insights and advice.”
