Ellie Louise Van Winkle

MS Student

Affiliated Department(s)

Department of Geography and Geosciences

Areas of expertise

Flood resiliency, stakeholder engagement

BIO

As a Masters of GeoScience graduate student, Eleanor's research focuses on flooding within the Winooski watershed. Her approach uses stakeholder input to identify infrastructure that is both vulnerable to flooding as well as important to the surrounding communities. She will be using 1-D HEC-RAS to model potential flood mitigation efforts that could lead to increased flood resiliency at those vulnerable locations. Using the models and the stakeholder input these sites and projects will be ranked to identify which opportunities best meet the multiple stakeholder objectives and make the most of the funds available.

Ellie has previously worked in environmental consulting which focused on fluvial geomorphology and river restoration. She has also spent multiple summers guiding canoe trips on rivers in Maine including the Allagash and both branches of the Penobscot. These opportunities have shown her how dynamic and powerful rivers are and how important it is to work with them when considering long term goals.
