On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Friends of the University of Vermont’s Special Collections will host the “Great Billings Book Sale,” in UVM’s Billings Library, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
More than one thousand books were donated by generous supporters of Special Collections and distinguished UVM faculty members, over a period of many years. These high-quality selections represent a variety of topics, including historical and contemporary works on literature, history, travel, book arts, architecture, landscape, art, and Vermont and Vermonters.
Sample works for sale include:
- G. G. Benedict’s 2 volume history of Vermont in the Civil War
- 4 volumes of Walter Hill Crockett’s history of Vermont
- a deluxe copy of The Shaping of Vermont by J. Kevin Graffagnino, with the accompanying portfolio of maps
- John W. Reps’ Cities of the Mississippi, a beautifully executed volume on 19th century birdseye views
- Writing Home: American Women Abroad, 1830-1920
- Dame Rebecca West’s 1900
- The Great Libraries, 3000 B.C. to 1600 A.D.
With volumes priced from as low as fifty cents and as high as $200, there will be something to match all tastes and pocket books. The majority of books are in the five to ten dollar range.
The event is held in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of Special Collections, to be celebrated in 2012. The Billings Library will serve as the future home of Special Collections, as well as UVM’s Center for Holocaust Studies and Center for Research on Vermont.
This event is free and open to the public. Information: (802) 656-2138, uvmsc@uvm.edu.
