Staff and Faculty Resources
Reset or change your account password
Larner College of Medicine and College of Nursing and Health Sciences faculty and staff should use the following link to reset or change the password for their med.uvm.edu account. Reset your password.
Remote Desktop Gateway
This is a virtual Windows computer that is accessed via a web browser and mimics the experience of being on campus when accessing Larner resources remotely. It provides access to the Office suite of software, department shared drives (L: drive), and other resources. We recommend using the following web browsers: Edge, Firefox, Chrome. Enter the Remote Desktop Gateway.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is required. To setup MFA, download the Multi-Factor Authentication Instructions (PDF) or submit a "Footprint" support ticket.
Virtual Private Network
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection allows you to securely access Larner and CNHS resources as if you were on campus. COMTS recommends the use of the Remote Desktop, but there are some instances where a VPN is preferable, such as accessing department shared drives while off-campus. College computers have the Cisco AnyConnect VPN application already installed. In Windows, use the Search Bar to find Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client and make sure the URL in the address field is vpn.med.uvm.edu. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is required. To setup MFA, download the Multi-Factor Authentication Instructions (PDF) or submit a "Footprint" support ticket.
To access the Secure L:Drive for specific research areas on the L: drive, you'll need to use the following URL: vpn.med.uvm.edu/secured.
For those using personal computers, please use the Remote Desktop Gateway.
Office Online Applications
Larner provides a license to Microsoft 365 applications, which are pre-installed on all College computers. Staff and faculty can access these tools, as well as the contents of their OneDrive cloud storage, by visiting the link below. Go to Microsoft Portal.
Wireless Networks - HSID Preferred
The health sciences buildings feature an additional wireless (wi-fi) network, the HSID network. By connecting to HSID instead of the UVM network, you'll have direct access to network / department printers and shared drives. Use your LCOM account login to access the HSID network.
SharePoint Online
SharePoint Online is a document sharing and collaboration space used by administrative departments, research labs, and student groups. Use your Larner account login into SharePoint.
Connect to a Department Shared (L:) Drive
Connect to the network file share location used by your department or lab. You will need a connection to the on-campus network via Ethernet cable, HSID Wi-Fi, or VPN.
Understanding L‑Drive Resources at the College
The L‑drive plays an important role in supporting the wide range of work done across our college. Because our community includes so many different teams—departments, labs, centers, and specialized research groups—we’ve designed the L‑drive to provide a space that meets the needs of each group while also protecting sensitive or regulated information.
To begin, our Groups folders are structured to serve the everyday business needs of departments. These folders allow department members to share documents, organize materials, and collaborate on administrative and operational tasks. Each department’s folder is arranged to match its own workflow, and department chairs and directors are ultimately responsible for what is stored there and how well it is maintained.
For research teams, we offer the Labs folders, which are organized by principal investigator (PI). This structure gives each PI control over how their research information is arranged, shared, and maintained. Because these folders reflect the specific work of an individual PI, responsibility for the content rests with them. This setup helps labs manage data in a way that supports their unique projects and team dynamics.
We also recognize that many groups collaborate more broadly, which is why we provide Centers folders. These are designed for one or more PIs who share a common mission or research theme. Unlike the PI‑specific Lab folders, Centers folders provide a shared space where multiple teams or investigators can work together more seamlessly. We do ask that Centers also have staff and internal governance processes to help guide how data is organized and how team members are trained. Centers are permitted to store protected health information (PHI) as long as they maintain the required safeguards and internal processes.
Some projects require even stronger protections, which is where our Secured and SEDRC Projects folders come in. These locations are designed for work involving sensitive data or heightened governance requirements. Both are organized on a project‑by‑project basis, ensuring that access is isolated and not shared across unrelated projects. A lab might, for example, keep most of its materials in its PI‑specific Lab folder but place a sensitive dataset into the Secured folder where access is limited to only a few individuals.
The Secured folder requires VPN access in addition to multi‑factor authentication, while the SEDRC Projects folder is accessible only through a Remote Desktop system and also requires multi‑factor authentication. These additional measures provide stronger isolation and enhanced protection for sensitive information. Both locations can store PHI when proper safeguards and training are in place.
Set up Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)
When Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is required, please download the Multi-Factor Authentication Instructions (PDF) or submit a "Footprint" support ticket.
