Larner College of Medicine

Division of Surgical Oncology

The Division of Surgical Oncology excels in multidisciplinary cancer care and is a pioneer in new surgical techniques for breast cancer and melanoma. We established the University of Vermont Medical Center Breast Care Center, an institutional model for the management of patients with all forms of cancer.

Education

Body

Over the last several years the DSO has been a major contributor to the education mission of the Department of Surgery. The Department of Surgery has won the Silver Shovel Award as the outstanding clinical teaching service by the graduating medical school class. This leadership in teaching also extends to the senior majors in surgery and resident teaching as well.

Research

Body

The division excels in sentinel node biopsy techniques and led the largest randomized surgical trial in collaboration with the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project. Their research focuses on bone marrow micrometastases in breast cancer. Dr. David Krag is developing tumor-specific binders to enhance cancer treatment and detection, while Dr. Ted James manages a multicenter database to assess treatment variations and patient outcomes.
