Larner College of Medicine

Division of Pediatric Surgery

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at UVM Larner College of Medicine provides surgical care for children from birth to adolescence, supporting the Vermont Children’s Hospital’s mission. We treat a broad spectrum of conditions across the entire pediatric patient population.

Education

Body

Our educational efforts aim to uphold UVM Larner College of Medicine and The University of Vermont Medical Center's legacies of educational excellence in the field of pediatric surgery. We deliver lectures and coordinate conferences for medical students and residents. Additionally, we sponsor the annual Arnold H. Colodny, MD Lectureship in Pediatric Surgery, featuring international experts in a two-day series of lectures that educate students, residents, and faculty. We understand the importance of educating families and patients, enhancing their understanding of conditions, surgical processes, and recovery expectations.

Research

Body

Division of Pediatric Surgery researchers collaborate with the Department of Anesthesiology to study the safety benefits of regional anesthesia in newborn surgery, an area of research where UVM and Larner continue to be leaders. We also investigate head injuries, intra-abdominal injuries, and other pediatric surgical conditions. Together , we have performed nearly 2,500 surgeries using spinal anesthesia, the largest reported experience with this technique, and are committed to broadening its use for pediatric patients.

Clinical Care

Body

The spectrum of conditions we treat range from surgical disorders in the smallest of premature infants to correction of chest wall deformities in teens and also includes treatment of congenital anomalies of the head and neck, chest, and abdomen; care of acute surgical problems throughout childhood; surgical management of pediatric tumors; and coordination of trauma care for children.
