Larner College of Medicine

Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery

The Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery is a regional leader in complex, minimally invasive abdominal, colorectal, and pancreatic surgeries, as well as basic general surgical care. In addition, we offer diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and upper endoscopy.

Education

Body

The General and Gastrointestinal Surgery is dedicated to educating medical students, residents, and attending surgeons. Our award-winning faculty excels in teaching and has created curricula for minimally invasive and endoscopic surgery simulation, along with bedside instruction and lectures. For over twenty years, we have successfully hosted an annual CME course, Current Concepts and Controversies in Surgery, with a high rate of returning participants.

Research

Body

Our surgeons participate in multi-institutional clinical trials through the University of Vermont Cancer Center, focusing on colorectal and pancreatic cancers. We engage in industry-funded studies on post-operative ileus prevention and contrast-enhanced endoscopic ultrasound for pancreatic tumor assessment. While we lack active basic science research, we have collaborated on studies regarding GI motility and sepsis responses, with further collaborations planned. Ongoing studies are also evaluating our educational programs.
