Our Capabilities
Utilizing the CSL
We offer 9,000 square feet of training space, including inpatient rooms, an ER/OR/MICU/SICU room, skills labs, a control center, debriefing rooms, and outpatient exam rooms. A satellite lab is located at the adjacent University of Vermont Medical Center.
The Clinical Simulation Lab rooms are in high demand. To schedule simulation space, please follow the instructions on our Scheduling Page.
Borrowing Equipment
The Clinical Simulation Lab has a variety of equipment, some of which is available to borrow outside our space. To inquire about using our equipment for your course or workshop, or for general questions about CSL capabilities and what we might be able to do for you, email our Manager of Simulation Operations Andrew Strong (andrew.strong@med.uvm.edu).
Our fleet of Butterfly Portable Ultrasounds is now managed by the Dana Health Sciences Library.
CSL Facilities
Simulated Procedure Room
Simulators with computer generated 3-D graphics help learners practice skills in fiberoptic intubation, transesophageal echocardiogram, laparoscopy, hip and shoulder arthroscopy, colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy, bronchoscopy including endobronchial ultrasound, and laparoscopic robotic surgery.
Task Trainer Room
The Task Trainer Room is a lab-style classroom where learners practice a variety of procedural skills. The Task Trainer Room can be configured to support many trainings, including arterial blood draw, wound care, lumbar puncture, joint injection, central line insertion, IV placement, chest tube insertion, and airway management.
Multi-Purpose Room
From Operating Room to Emergency Room to Medical Intensive Care Unit to Surgical Intensive Care Unit to Delivery Room, this fully equipped space can be transformed to meet the need of the learner.
Simulated Hospital
The Simulated Hospital consists of six patient rooms with A/V recording capabilities. Students enter from the outside hallway while instructors and simulation technicians sit behind one-way glass to run the simulation and operate equipment and manikins. After, learners regroup to review the simulation in one of our debriefing rooms.
Simulated Outpatient Clinic
The Outpatient Clinic has 12 exam rooms containing an A/V system, one way glass, headphones and a centrally located control station to allow monitoring in each room. Computers are located outside each room for students to complete pre- and post-encounter activities as well as inside each room for the Standardized Patients to complete their evaluations.
Debrief Rooms
The CSL has one Large and one Small Debriefing Room, where learners meet post-simulation to reflect on their performance, discuss key learning points, and examine how their experiences during simulation may be applied to real-life situations.
McClure Teaching Room
A simulation room located at our teaching hospital provides a convenient location for residents and nurses to train and conduct research. This location includes an inpatient room and an attached control room with a one-way mirror.
