Originally from South Africa, Elzerie de Jager, M.B.B.S., Ph.D holds a medical degree and a PhD from the James Cook University in Townsville, Australia. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Surgery and Public Health – a collaboration between Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. de Jager has interned at the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and has since contributed to several WHO technical reports. She has worked clinically as a doctor in Australia, and has done rotations in rural areas of Fiji and Thailand.
Her research focuses on healthcare quality improvement, health equity, and disease and injury prevention. In 2021, Dr. de Jager was invited to present her work on health equity metrics to leadership at the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Her research examining firearm injuries, specifically the use of semi-automatic rifles in active shooter events, has been cited in several amicus briefs and in a testimony hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. Her work has been published in leading journals, including JAMA, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, and Health Affairs. Dr. de Jager is an assistant professor in the UVM Larner College of Medicine Public Health program.
