We advance medical knowledge through cannabis research. Through education, we translate observations in the laboratory, clinic, and community into interventions that improve health, bridging scientific discoveries in cannabis-based medicine with the needs of health care providers, researchers, students, professionals, and the general public.

The University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine's Medical Cannabis Center for Research and Education (MCCRE) advances medical knowledge and promotes health through research and education in cannabis, including the cannabis plant, cannabis-based medicine, and public health.

Educating at the Forefront

MCCRE faculty offer Cannabis education for UVM students, medical providers and industry professionals with an evidence-based curriculum taught by academic and industry content-matter experts. The University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine was the first medical school in the country to offer classes in Cannabis science. At the forefront of academic health care, these programs address the emerging need for evidence-based medical cannabis education.

Program and Course Examples

Pharmacology 200: Medical Cannabis / On-Campus (college credit)

Body

This in person class provides an introduction to the pharmacology underlying recreational and medicinal uses of cannabis. Topics focus on cannabis taxonomy, chemistry of cannabinoids, physiological effects, and emerging therapeutic applications. Class discussions include historical, political and socio-economic influences on Cannabis legislation. 

Cannabis Science and Medicine Professional Certificate

Body

Developed at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, our professional certificate in cannabis and medicine filled the need for evidence-based cannabis education. This seven-week, online professional certificate is designed for professionals looking to better understand how plant chemicals are created, and how they affect the human body.

Professional Certificate in Cannabis Plant Biology

Created in UVM’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences by leaders in Cannabis agriculture, this 8-week, fully online evidence-based program covers cannabis chemicals, genetics, agricultural best practices, post-harvest handling, processing, as well as how cannabis effects the human body through learning basic pharmacology and examining the different modes of administration.
