BIO

Dr. Shruti Khurana is a board-certified gastroenterologist specializing in Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. As the Director of Crohn's and Colitis Center at University of Vermont Medical Center, she leads a multidisciplinary team of nurses, dietitians, social workers, and infusion specialists across six hospitals in University of Vermont Health Network that caters to patients in Vermont and residents of neighboring states including New York, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Dr. Khurana earned her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi which has been consistently ranked among India’s top medical schools. She then completed a rigorous combined residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at McGovern Medical School (UTHealth) in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. She finished her Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

“I believe that true healing lies in the details—by understanding each patient’s unique story down to its smallest threads, we can weave together a treatment plan that honors their journey,” she reflects. She remains committed to expanding access to equitable, evidence-based care and to ensuring each patient feels heard, supported, and confidently guided through their IBD journey.

Dr. Khurana employs a treat-to-target strategy: she sets clear goals such as symptom relief and evidence of healing on tests and adjusts treatments until those targets are achieved. She specializes in performing a procedure called chromoendoscopy (a special dye-based colonoscopy technique that reveals subtle inflammation) to guide surveillance and treatment decisions. She also integrates comprehensive nutrition guidance into each care plan and provides vigilant oversight of clinical-trial participants to ensure safety and optimal outcomes.

Known for her compassionate communication and thorough patient education, Dr. Khurana covers all aspects of treatment—medications, lifestyle modifications, and follow-up strategies to empower patients at every step. She partners closely with each patient to tailor care around their lifestyle, preferences, and personal goals.
